However, the chocolaterie is not very successful, the landlord Thierry wants more than a slice of torte, and Anouk hates her new school. Ever careful of public scrutiny – lest she reveal any hint of their bewitching gifts or the disaster that engulfed them in Lansquenet – Vianne is going by the name Yanne and Anouk is calling herself Annie. This is five years after Vianne Rocher and her six-year-old daughter Anouk had all that trouble in the formerly sleepy little village of Lansquenet-sous-Tannes.įinding life on the road too much for Anouk and her new sibling Rosette, Vianne decides to settle in Paris, and soon gets a job at a backstreet Montmartre chocolaterie. In short, she’s magic, and The Lollipop Shoes – the long-awaited sequel to her worldwide best-seller Chocolat – is an absolutely scrumptious read. However, Joanne Harris is in a class of her own.Īside from being a beautiful writer, she’s funny, highly intelligent, beguiling and surprisingly hip. Call me a cynic, but I’m not very keen on fairytales, however dark and contemporary. It must spell trouble, especially if the author is Joanne Harris.
